AYRSHIRE’S powerchair footballers need just a draw from their final round of matches to retain their Scottish Championship title.

The Ayrshire Tigers moved to within touching distance of the crown after back-to-back wins over Strathclyde Caledonia and Dundee United Dynamos in the penultimate round of fixtures on March 24.

In their first match against Caledonia at The Peak sports village in Stirling, the Tigers looked the more likely in the first half after creating a number of chances, but were unable to break the deadlock.

That all changed in the second half, though, with an early breakthrough in the form of a good finish from McNiven.

Tigers were then awarded a penalty after Caledonian committed a foul in the box, and Niven stepped up and coolly put the ball in the corner to secure the win.

The Tigers’ final match of the day saw them up against a Dynamos team who went into the game on top of the league, but in a closely-contested game the Tigers chalked up another 2-0 win, taking the lead with an own goal before completing an excellent performance, and result, with a great team goal, brilliantly finished by leading goalscorer Torrance after an assist from Niven from inside his own half.

The final round of matches will be played on Sunday, April 28.
