HIGH-flying Prestwick and Ayr occupy the top top two spots in the Western Premier Division following another excellent weekend for the teams.

A short trip to Whitehaugh was undertaken by Prestwick as they took on struggling hosts Kelburne.

The home side lost the toss and were put into bat on what was a soft wicket. After a disappointing start which saw them lose the early wickets of Luke Smith and skipper Shazad Rafiq, the visitors steadied the ship and Sachin Chaudhary and Fraser Macdonald put on a partnership of 65, with the former hitting 56 and the latter 16, while Tom Fleet hit 23 as they reached 136 for five in 41 overs. However they were unable to complete their innings with play delayed for more than an hour.

Kelburne were then set a revised target of 126 to win under the Duckworth/Lewis Method.

However they were bowled all out for 47. Chaudhary completing a vintage all-round display with six for five with Willie Rowan taking two wickets and former captain Gavin Pitt one.

Victory took Prestwick into top spot on 83.5 per cent, just 0.28 per cent ahead of Ayr, after they recorded a nine wicket victory at Dumfries.

After bowling out the home team for 215 with Shujja Khan claiming career best figures of six for 34 and Scott McElnea taking three for 51, openers Neil Smith (92) and Michael Papps (97 not out) then put on 200 for the first wicket as they raced to victory with 12 overs to spare.

On Wednesday night Ayr reached the semi final of the McCulloch Cup with victory away to Uddingston. Some accurate bowling restricted the home team to 103 -5 before Michael Papps with 57 not out steered Ayr to victory and a home tie against Ferguslie next month.

At home, on Saturday the Cambusdoon XI beat Nunholm by 66 runs. Posting 248-9 with Ross Mitchell (52) and Richard Borland (46) making the major contributions, they then bowled the visitors out for 182 with Harry Boyd taking 3-45 and two wickets each for Richard Borland and Pushkar Bhandari.

The Development XI lost their last section game of the Western Cup at home to Kilmarnock on Tuesday night. Batting first they scored 121-7, Ross Mitchell top scoring with 43 not out and 37 from Callum Henderson, a total which Kilmarnock reached of the first ball of the last over. Jacob Whittle was top performer with the ball taking 3-18. On Sunday they fell to a five-wicket defeat at home to Kelburne in the Sunday League. After they had been bowled out for 139 with Johnny Baines (37) and Richard Borland (28) the only batsmen to make any real contribution, the visitors reached their target with eight overs to spare. Johnny Baines taking 3-8 and Lloyd Jefferson 2-20.

This week sees Ayr travel to Paisley to take on Ferguslie while the Cambusdoon XI are at home to Meikleriggs.

Prestwick are at Dumfries.
