AN Ayr mum has taken on the battle of fighting Alopecia - and wants to raise awareness of the condition.

Amiee Young, 30, runs Untangled which sells Freedom Hair - a hair company based in New Zealand - and it is the only one of it's kind in Scotland.

Amiee's Alopecia started after she gave birth to her son in 2012.

She said: "I had my baby boy in June 2012 and it was the most amazing time of my life, which quickly paralleled with the worst time of my life.

"My hair started falling out, at first I thought it was normal as I'd read your hair grows quicker during pregnancy and then falls out afterwards.

"I was going to regular mum and baby groups and would talk with other mums who had also noticed hair loss so didn’t really worry about it at first.

"Around October or November time in 2012 the bald patches were getting really big so I went to my doctor who told me not to worry and my hair would all probably be back by the time my son was one.

"My hair loss got worse and worse and I was back at my GP on a further 2 occasions before I was diagnosed with alopecia and referred to a dermatologist.

"By the end of January 2013 I had lost every bit of hair from my whole entire body.

"Nothing can prepare you for looking in the mirror and not recognising the person looking back at you.

Amiee is also on the board of charity Auto-immune Alopecia Research UK (AAR-UK) which aims to raise funds to conduct research into this condition.

Amiee said: "I have been volunteering with the charity since July 2013 and have so far raised a lot of money doing bag packs in Asda Ayr, bake sales, an abseil, a 5k Muddy Trail and Bungee jump but to name a few."

The group will now be able to afford a Biobank, a machine that stores medical samples. Our charity has a database of willing people with alopecia who would provide samples of blood and skin which scientists and medical researchers can use.

"As a charity we also organised a crowd funding campaign between the September 1 and November 30 2015 with the aim of raising £20,000 in these 3 months to fund the first BIOBANK for alopecia. We were successful and this should be going ahead this year."
