SOUTH Ayrshire Council invited sporting legend Johnny Hubbard to a civic reception recently to recognise his contribution to local sport.

Now 85-years-old, Johnny moved to Scotland from South Africa more than 50 years ago and made his mark on Scottish sport. He played football for Ayr United but spent the majority of his career at Glasgow Rangers.

When he left football Johnny was able to combine two passions, sport and teaching and for over three decades Johnny dedicated himself to running clubs and tournaments for young people from across Ayrshire.

Johnny has coached thousands of young people and some like footballers Steven Naismith and Kris Boyd have gone on to compete at international level.

South Ayrshire Provost Helen Moonie said: “Johnny’s clubs made such a difference to the lives of young people, he gave them purpose and self-belief with his ‘can do’ attitude.

“His passion for sport is boundless and he put so much effort into passing on his expertise and knowledge. I want to thank Johnny for all his hard work and dedication and recognise his selfless contribution to sport and to the lives of young people.”
