GIRVAN has been described as the ‘forgotten town’ following failure to contact the owners of the former cinema building.

At the beginning of the summer, a letter was sent to the owners calling for them to fix the eyesore but there has been no reply and take responsibility for the property.

South Ayrshire Council are securing the outside of the former cinema building to ensure it is made safe.

The prominent issue which has been discussed on a regular basis over a number of months was revisited at a recent Girvan Town Team meeting.

At the gathering, cllr Alec Clark, said: “We will not allow this building to be side lined. Girvan will not be forgotten.

“There will be some sort of report issued after a survey is conducted. It is going to happen, we are going to get something pushed for the building.”

Cllr Peter Henderson added: “We are moving forward. It is not as if nothing is happening.”

Roddy Macdonald, the town team coordinator, asked: “Can we see what is planned?”

Cllr Henderson replied: “I have asked the council to submit the plan.”

Cllr Clark continued: “We need the people of the town to pressure the the owners to do something about the building.

“If it was not so far gone, we could turn the building into a theatre.”

Cllr Henderson added: “I have had 23 calls from residents regarding this situation.”

Town Team member Ann McGinnis, previously said that a freedom of information request confirmed the building at a significant amount of dry rot.

Tiles falling off the building are also being monitored. The Town Team are determined to force the owners to take responsibility for their property.
