Ardagh Group West of Scotland Cup First Round

MAJOR mistakes cost Girvan as they fell at the first hurdle in the West of Scotland Cup.

The Hamilton Park side went into this game on a high after edging out Ayrshire rivals Muirkirk in the Scottish Junior Cup seven days earlier.

However they got off to the worst possible start in 14 minutes when a corner-kick was driven in low and hard to the near post and turned into the net from six yards. Nines minute later a free-kick from 22 yards came out the back of the post and was cleared.

However the lead was doubled in 35 minutes when a 20-yard effort hit the inside of the post and went in.

Five minutes after the break there was controversy. A solo effort from the centre forward saw him beat two defenders and then lob the goalie to make it 3-0. At the start of the move the linesman had the flag up for offside then put it down again.

In 57 minutes visiting goalie Ally McInnes made a good save from a 15-yard shot, tipping it over the crossbar

Seven minutes later visiting player Calum McDaid was through on goal and tried to chip advancing goalie, who managed to get a hand to it and a defender cleared.

Girvan played well in spells but some mistakes at certain times cost them dearly.

GIRVAN: McInnes; Barrett, Caldwell, Mossie, Mitchell, Cameron, McDaid, Milligan, Tait, Lamont, Wilson. Subs: Sisi, Copeland, Harvey.
