Two Ayrshire men have raised more than £4,000 for the RNLI by walking to Girvan.

John Oliver and Robert Green each walked 19 miles to raise vital funds for Girvan’s lifeboat station.

John walked from his home in Kilmarnock to Girvan, with Robert making the trek from Minishant, before meeting up and walking the final stretch to the lifeboat station together.

John, 66, has been a charity champion for many years, and roped in pal Robert for his latest endeavour.

He explained: “30 years ago I had a bad house fire and lost everything, and it was only through the generosity of others that we got back on our feet.

“I wanted to give back and just haven’t stopped. I’ve raised tens of thousands of pounds for charities across Ayrshire, and the RNLI was my latest effort.

Ayr Advertiser:

“I’ve seen first hand the work that the lifeboat crew do, and they can always use the support of people fundraising for them.”

John reveals the pair had a lot of support on their walk, with friends and family walking with them at different stages.

He said: “The weather was okay with a little bit of drizzle, but it was actually almost ideal conditions for walking. We had some people join us along the way, and it certainly made the journey a bit easier with people to talk to.

“Robert and I met at the football park in Girvan and walked down to the lifeboat station to the finish line.

“The crew were cheering us on and had a wee buffet for us so it was just a lovely day all round for a great cause.”

The pair smashed their original target of £1,500, and are hoping to reach £4,500 before they present the money to the RNLI later this month.

John added: “The support has been excellent, people’s generosity is honestly something else.

“A lot of money has come from local masonic lodges as Robert and myself are involved in that, and we can’t thank them enough.”

A Girvan Lifeboat spokesperson added: "We at Girvan lifeboat are humbled by not only the time and dedication the guys are putting into this but also the generosity of everyone who has sponsored them.”
