Take a look at the Alloway Tunnel's amazing new mural

Artist Chris Rutterford officially unveiled the first part of his work, showing two magnificent Clydesdale horses.

A special ceremony was held to mark the end of the project's first stage, attended by supporters and guests at the weekend, including MP Allan Dorans and South Ayrshire Council Depute Provost Mary Kilpatrick.

Chris Rutterford and creative director Lubi Lykan carried out community engagement to find out what people would like to see included in the mural.

And the results are outstanding.

The community arts project aims to transform the old unsightly tunnel into a bright and inspiring place.

The mural also depicts Robert Burns writing in his cottage, with his collie at his side. 

It will eventually include Tam O'Shanter, overlooking the Brig O' Doon.

On the opposite side of the tunnel, which is still blank, there will be scenes of Ayr, with a tavern and market. It will also include famous South Ayrshire sites such as Culzean Castle and Ailsa Craig.

The planned finale is 'The Last Train to Butlins' which will be on the exterior wall opposite Tam O'Shanter.

It will include a crowd made up of real people, who can have their portraits painted into the scene.

The work has already involved 850 local people, including children from Alloway and Doonfoot primaries, Ayrshire College students and other community groups.

A spokesperson for the project said on their Facebook site: "It was a lights, camera, action kind of day in the tunnel.

"We were celebrating the completion of the first part of our mural. I think we can all agree it's the the jewel in the crown so far; 'The Clydesdales.'

"Chris Rutterford, your work is outstanding. The feedback has been phenomenal. The feeling when you visit the tunnel is uplifting. Massive congratulations."
