THREE men had a lucky escape as their work van exploded in Prestwick today. 

The vehicle caught fire in Shaw Road before the men got out, with one man taken to hospital as a precaution. 

Emergency services rushed to scene around 11.20am.

An image showed that the vehicle was engulfed in flames. 

Scottish Fire and Rescue sent three crews to tackle the blaze. 

The road has been closed in both directions to all traffic. 

A spokesperson for Scottish Fire and Rescue said: "We were alerted at 11.24am on Friday, August 7 to reports of a vehicle fire in Prestwick.

"Operations Control mobilised three appliances to the town's Shaw Road, where firefighters were met by a van on fire."

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "Police were called at around 11.30 am following a report that a van had caught fire and exploded in Shaw Road, Prestwick. 

"Fire service attended and extinguished.  There were no injuries - one man (a workman - one of three from the van) was taken to a local hospital as a precaution.  Enquiries are continuing."
