Rangers stars past and present have come together to remember one of their own after his tragic death.

Fernando Ricksen, 43, passed away this morning after a lengthy battle with motor neurone disease.

The Dutchman was a big part of Gers' culture and has been immortalised as a member of the club's Hall of Fame.

Players and clubs from around Scotland and beyond have already shared their love and tributes.

The list includes Celtic CEO Peter Lawwell, ex-Old Firm rival Stiliyan Petrov and, another of Ricksen's former clubs, Zenit St Petersburg.

But close friends of Ricksen's were also ready to remember their pal and give messages of support to his wife Veronika and little daughter Isabella, six.

Nacho Novo posted on social media: "Sad news my friend my best friend a role model always a fighter love u to bits mate rip I will see u soon brother".

Lorenzo Amoruso added: "Rest in peace my friend FERNANDO RICKSEN".

Fellow Dutch star Arthur Numan recalled the pair's friendship on talkSPORT.

He said: "I got a phone call this morning and when I saw the name appearing on my screen I knew it was bad news and then he told me Fernando passed away an hour ago.

"I knew the situation because I went to see him a couple of weeks ago in St Andrews Hospice.

"You could see him lying in bed and it's quite sad when you knew how he was in his early days.

Tributes pour in for ex-Rangers star Ricksen after he loses battle with motor neurone disease

"He was mad, full of energy and active then you see him lying in his bed. He can't move, he can't do anything.

"This week I was up in Scotland and I wanted to visit him again but they told me nobody was allowed in his room and then I thought it would only be a matter of days before I got a phone call and unfortunately it happened this morning."
