DROP-IN sessions for people with brain injuries are now being held at a Galashiels community centre.

Charity Headway has launched its new programme at the Focus Centre in Livingstone Place.

And the events, which will take place twice a month, will allow people to come together for a chat and enjoy a number of activities.

Rogan Grant, chairman of Headway, told us: “These events will take place on the first and third Tuesday of every month from 10am until 4pm.

“It is all about getting people with brain injuries out having fun and giving them a chance to get support. We have picked Galashiels as it is a real central hub for the Borders.

“We have held one or two events in the past in Kelso and at Trinity Church, but this is the first of the regular drop-in sessions we will run.”

The programme was officially opened last Tuesday by Bill White, who is chairman of leisure trust Live Borders. He said: “My wife worked here many years ago at the Ability Centre and helped many people [with brain injuries] progress from what was a devastating experience to learn to do things perhaps in a different way.

“I am sure this will be an excellent facility for people to come and discuss their anxieties and frustrations with people who have similar problems.

“As we know local authorities are continuing to close facilities like day centres, so an organisation like this is welcomed.”

The activities on offer include a number of games such as table tennis and indoor bowls.

Judith Cleghorn, chairwoman of the Focus Centre committee, said: “We are delighted to welcome Headway to the Focus Centre.

“It is great to attract new groups to the town.

“It is a big day for the centre and we wish Headway all the success for the future.”
