THE Quay Zone welcomes visitors to a unique opportunity to learn about Girvan’s heroes who died during the First World War.

Girvan & District War Project was set up to gather information about soldiers from the area. Volunteer representatives will be set up in The Quay Zone on Friday, November 2 between 10am and 2pm to share their findings.

The project has been running for five years and has a number of special events and pieces of work to show to celebrate the Centenary. This event will show information relating to 468 local men from Girvan and surrounding villages from birth until they died.

Where available you will be able to see information on service records, medal roll cards, award rolls, census records, parents’ names, and siblings. The project would also be more than happy to email any information that they have to you for free.

The list has been compiled for Girvan from the War Memorial, High School Roll of Honour, North Parish Church, South Parish Church, St John’s Episcopal Church and names from the headstones in Doune and Old Street Cemetery. For the villages, war memorials, church rolls of honour and churchyard inscriptions have been used.

There are also lists of names of those who enlisted and where any of the information has not been fully researched yet you can come along and start the process with the project to find out about your loved ones and family members.

The project has found the support of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) invaluable in gathering this fantastic information and as a result has donated money received from its “Adopt a Stone for a Soldier” initiative to the commission to assist with its work.  This initiative involved painting stones with the soldier’s names and placing them at memorials around South Carrick.

So why not drop in on Friday or Saturday for something different and to hear about the great men who fought for us during the Great War.  The event is totally free and The Quay Zone has a warm, friendly Café for you to enjoy as well.

You can find The Quay Zone at Knockcushan Street, Girvan, KA26 9AG.
