A 'big cat expert' has told police they don't believe the animal spotted between Drongan and Coalhall is a black panther.

Liaising with police, neither can yet confirm what type of creature has been roaming South Ayrshire.

Police issued a safety warning to residents in Drongan and Coalhall following a sighting of what was believed to be a black panther.

The animal was seen in the fields near to the B730 between the two villages.

Officers are still currently working with the SSPCA to locate the animal which may be injured, and enquiries are ongoing.

It's not the first time a nearby wild cat has been spotted. A Cumnock local said he came face-to-face with a "puma-like creature" in June this year.

Police have advised that care should be taken as the area is popular with dog walkers and if anyone sees the animal they should not approach it, but to contact Police via 101 quoting incident number 0780 of Friday 19 October 2018.
