THE 7s squad from Marr Rugby’s National One championship-winning side were back in action at Hamilton RFC’s tournament.

And after enjoying victories in all four ties played in the pool matches, they faced top side the hosts in the final.

A crowd of around 400 enjoyed champagne rugby in glorious sunshine and a composed display from Marr that delivered a 42-12 win.

Marr’s 7s coach Kenny Diffenthal was very pleased with the performance from his squad which showed four changes from their last outing. With a number of normal

selection contenders unavailable due to study, work or other commitments Kenny called up some 2s players with Jack Scott and Callum Craig who made their debut appearances. The final places were filled by a couple of guest players from Carrick - special thanks to Blair Jardine and Greg Montgomery for stepping up to help.

The route to the final saw wins against Cartha, Bentlaigh, Herriot Watt University and Dalziel. On the way Marr scored 179 points, while conceding only 15.

In the final, Marr faced a tough challenge from a useful home side but they were able to outplay them at the breakdown.

Winning crucial turnover ball, Marr’s speedsters were unleashed and Dan Law, Stewart Howie, Colin Sturgeon, Conor Bickerstaff and Scott Bickerstaff made the most of any opportunity.

The tournament was the perfect set-up and challenge as Marr continue to develop their fledgling 7s squad. The next and final test for the season is the Glasgow City 7s tournament on Saturday at Cartha’s grounds in Glasgow.
