GIRVAN 1

HURLFORD UNITED 0

By Matt Speirs

GIRVAN gained their first victory in the Super League in a hard -fought match at

Hamilton Park that could have gone either way.

The Super First Division champions were looking to bounce back after their 5-0 defeat at Brora in the William Hill Scottish Cup and desperately seeking three points following three draws and a defeat in what was a reasonable start to the campaign.

Hurlford were first to show, Callum Watt playing in former Ayr United manager Mark Roberts but the veteran striker's shot

was diverted for a corner.

Play was confined to midfield for a spell but in 22 minutes, it took a good save from Scott Johnston to keep a Dean Agnew effort out.

Two minutes later a cross from Girvans Scott Reid was headed wide by Robert Paterson.

Girvan were having a good spell and in 27 minutes, it took a fine

save by Alister Brown to deny David Cunningham the opening goal.

Five minutes from the interval home striker Michael Reilly was played in but he shot wide.

Two minutes after the interval Watt had a chance to put Hurlford ahead but a fine save by Scott Johnston denied him.

Girvan took the lead two minutes later when a corner-kick caused a scramble in the penalty area and when the ball broke to David Cunningham he turned it into the net from close range.

Hurlford began to put pressure on the Girvan defence and on the hour, an Allan Jenkins free-kick was just too high.

Nine minutes from the end Hurlfords Ross Robertson saw his header turned on to he post by Scott Johnston.

A minute later an even better save by Johnston kept out another Watt attempt.

Girvan held to post what could be quite an important win as they gear up to host form side Kilbirnie Ladeside on Saturday.

GIRVAN: Johnston, Doolan, McDowall, Mossie, O'Donnell, Dinwoodie, P. Cameron, Reid, Reilly, Paterson, Cunningham. Subs: M Cameron, Hunter, Frame.
