MAYBOLE 2

CUMNOCK 3

by Matt Speirs

A LAST gasp goal saw suffer Maybole suffer a heartbreaking defeat to remain firmly in the drop zone after Carlo Walker's side had blasted back from behind to set up a thrilling finish.

This match had everything - four penalty kicks some good outfield play and good play from both goalkeepers.

Maybole started brightly and were unlucky in five minutes when a James Cuthbertson cross-cum shot hit the bar and was cleared for a corner. Three minutes later it took a fine save by Grant Weir from a John Watt free-kick to keep the sides level.

Cumnock had a chance to go ahead in 19 minutes, but Aiden Malone headed over the bar from six yards.

Cuthbertson then brought out a save from Cumnock keeper Darren Johnson. The opening goal came in 31 minutes when Jonathan Lindsy sent a low cross into the penalty area and Raymond Montgomerie netted from close range.

Eleven minutes after the break, the visitors were awarded a penalty when John Frame was adjudged to have committed a foul and Paul Burns netted from the penalty spot.

Maybole got back into the match in 75 minutes when Johnson pulled Stuart Peacock down in the penalty area and Cuthbertson slotted home from 12 yards.

Four minutes from the end it appeared as if Maybole had rescued a point when Cuthbertson was upended inside the penalty area by James Lindsay and Cuthbertson netted from the spot.

A minute from the end, the assistant referee raised his flag and the Maybole players committed the cardinal sin of not playing to the whistle the referee allowed play to continue and then awarded Cumnock a penalty kick. Burns had his spot-kick effort saved by Weir. However Burns netted from the rebound to clinch all three points for the visitors and deepen Maybole's relegation worries.

MAYBOLE: Weir; Doolan, McGowan, Frame, McKay, Peacock, Cameron, Love, Shankland, Cuthbertson, Reilly. Subs: Connor, Murphy, Todd, McKechnie.
