LONG-serving Ayr United central defender Martyn “Bobo” Campbell has been praised by boss Ian McCall after details of his testimonial match were announced.

Northern Irish Premiership side Coleraine will visit Somerset Park on Saturday, July 18, ko 3pm.

The player’s older brother Mark, a former Somerset Park favourite. is also set to feature in the big day.

McCall is delighted the experienced stopper, who has signed on a pay-per-play baiss is being recognised and said: “Big Bobo has been a great servant to the Club and it’s right and fitting he gets due recognition for his service. I hope the fans will turn out in numbers on the day. This is also a very important part of our pre season preparations and coming seven ays before the season starts with the Petrofac cup it will be a great test for us and also allow the fans to see the new signings in action.” The Testimonial hyear started with a Somerset Boab funday in the Hospitality suite and continues with the match. It will be closed off with a Brunch in September. All activities are being organised by the Martyn Campbell Testimonial Association, which is independent of Ayr United FC.

Testimonial Chairman Stevie Maguire added: “We are pleased to confirm the date for the Testimonial match and will be working hard to make it an enjoyable day for all and we hope Martyn will get a great turnout on the day.”.

The Bannsiders had a disappointing season finishing eighth in the Premiership and are looking to progress in the season ahead. Manager Oran Kearney will bring his side to Scotland as part of their build up to the new season and are pleased to be providing the opposition for Martyn’s game.

The day will also feature an Old Crocks challenge match prior to the main event and this will see many old and popular faces return to the Club. The format will be a Martyn Campbell select against a Mark Campbell select, ensuring a strong competitive element with all participants to be former Ayr United players.

Meanwhile McCall confirmed he is still aiming to make two more new signings before the campaign begins, with a striker and utility player the top of his priorities.

The gaffer spoke as his players prepare to return for pre-season training on Thursday.

He told Sportscene: “I am looking around to see who is available but we could do with a striker as well as a utility player who could feature in defence and midfield.” The boss also still hopes to have striker Jordan Preston on loan again from Blackburn and defender Scott McKenna on loan from Aberdeen FC.
