A MASSIVE boost has been delivered to Ayr United with defensive powerhouse Peter Murphy set to stay on at the club.

The Irishman had been mulling over an offer from manager Ian McCall for the past few weeks but has now decided to commit for season 2015-16.

Murphy was snapped up by former boss Mark Roberts from Carlisle United last summer and was a key figure in their survival in League One.

Manager Ian McCall welcomed the news and said: “Peter is on holiday but has agreed in principle to sign when he comes back. Myself and John Henry, the assistant can mentor the younger players. But Peter is an outstanding professional with so much experience and he can help work with the younger lads on the field.

“He is a great character to have around the dressing room. Peter firmly believes that we can challenge at the top end of the table next season – that’s why he has agreed to sign and it’s great news.” McCall is also hoping to have striker Jordan Preston and defender Scott McKenna on loan from Blackburn Rovers and Aberdeen respectively again at the start of the new campaign.

The manager added: “We would like the two guys back as they did very well last season but it will be a wee while before we find out what’s happening.” The squad was further boosted last week with the addition of defensive midfielder Ross Docherty from Airdrieonians.

McCall said of the new recruit: “I watched Ross a few times last season and he impressed me every time. He is different to what we have already, a defensive midfielder who is great at breaking up play and making a pass. He also comes very highly rated. I am delighted to have him on board for this season.” Docherty signed for Airdrie in December and played nearly every game in their excellent run of form in the second half of the season.

Meanwhile, off-the-field United are planning a fun event aimed at youngsters in Ayr on Sunday.

Mikey Donald, Alan Forrest and Ryan Nisbet are loking for all-comers to challenge them to a FIFA 2015 challenge which features the famous X-Box game.

Entry will be by a minimum donation of £5 with money raised going to the Somerset Boab Player Fund.

Commentary will be supplied by Calum Campbell of AU Media and Boab will perform some Ayr United songs.

The event kicks off at 3pm at the 8 Ball Pool Hall in Arthur Street at 3pm with a minimum age of 10.
