MIDFIELDER Craig McGuffie is looking to build on his weekend double as Ayr United defeated Queen's Park away to move into top spot in League One.

The 20-year-old came off the bench to cement the 4-1 victory and move the Honest Men a point clear of Raith Rovers, ahead of Alloa Athletic's visit to Somerset Park on Saturday.

McGuffie, in his third season at Somerset Park, said after the match: "It has been frustrating for me in terms of getting goals and assists. It's good to come and get a double - it's out of the blue to be honest.. I don' think I've been playing to the best of my abilities recently. The first goal saw a good bit of play from Mark Kerr who back-heeled the ball to me - I could tell it was in the minute I hit it, the ball just curled in off the post, I thought it was a good goal. For my second goal, the ball came to me. I did a double step over and came inside, I saw a gap and the ball just curled in. Luckily it went in."

"The gaffer says I'm scoring goals like that in training all the time but I've not been doing it much on Saturdays. hopefully I can now do it more now. I'm not sure what's happening about my future, the gaffer is talking about going on loan to get more game time but I'll just have to wait and see."

Manager Ian McCall was impressed with the double hero and said: "Caig McGuffie showed us what he is capable of with two really good goals."

He's a talented boy destined for big things, but is just a kid and we are thinking about putting him out on loan to give him more game time.

Of the match the manager said: "In the second half it was even and although they had a couple of chances we were better than them."

Andy Geggan and Steven Bell could return from injury while Robbie Crawford is expected to be back running and skipper Ross Docherty is still out.

The boss is delighted with new signing Mark Kerr, who made his debut and said: "His fitness levels are more like a 25-year-old than a 35-year-old, there is a lot more to come from him I'm sure. He's a real character in the dressing room and I'm sure he will do well for us."

McCall is expecting a tough game against the Wasps and said: "They are a good side. It's a very important game and we must look to take three points."

United's Scottish Cup tie against Fraserburgh or Rangers is scheduled for Sunday, February 11, ko 2.30pm.
