ANGRY Troon FC assistant boss Matt Maley has hit out at the SJFA for calling off Saturday's top-of-the-table clash with Peterhill off despite Portland Park being playable.

The Seasiders were all set for what was one of their biggest games of the season but they learned on Friday night that all West Region games had been called off - apart from Irvine Victoria's home league clash with Whitletts Victoria and Irvine Meadow's Scottish Junior Cup tie against Dunbar, owing to concerns about the weather.

Troon have lost just two league games and would have been going into the game with confidence following a hard-fought 2-1 win in the first game of the year against Petershill.

Maley said on Saturday: "It's a wasted day as far as as we are concerned. The pitch is absolutely fine and Gus Hollas, the groundsman has been working on it all week. Now we might end up playing three days a week in the spring. If the SJFA are going to call off games there should be a better system. They consult the clubs beforehand. We contacted Petershill to say our pitch was fine but they told us they had already cancelled their buses and as it was after 5pm on Friday there was nothing we could do to reverse that. All the food was ready and the bar was stocked, so we will use a few hundred pounds from this call-off.

"We will now prepare for the game being on at the weekend."

SJFA secretary Scott Robertson said this week: "The Police were warning people against driving so you have to follow that. Irvine Vics and Irvine Meadow's pitches were playable but Petershill would have had to travel to Troon."
