A WIDE range of shots - both conventional and unconventional - were played and there were some impressive and unorthodox bowling deliveries as golf and cricket joined forces for a charity event in Prestwick last week.

Caddies and golfers took on a joint team from home club Prestwick and Helensburgh Cricket Clubs in a charity cricket match at the Henry Thow Oval last Tuesday.

And four European tour golfers - South African Hennie Otto, Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts, German Marcel Siem and Englishman Andy Sullivan were in the team with the caddies.

The event was held to raise money for Gillians Saltire Appeal, a charity set up by Les Ward, in memory of his wife Gillian, who died of cancer 10 years ago and he set up the charity in Gillian's name.

Organiser John Wilkie, a member of the European Tour Caddies' Association said: "Gillians Saltire Appeal have a flat in Largs and another one in Millport for carers or people who suffer from cancer can come and stay there for a week if they are referred to by Maggie's Centres. Last year the European Tour Accies Association asked for a charity which could be affiliated to them and I nominated Gillian's Saltire Appeal. So last year was the first year we held a cricket match nearest the Scottish Open venue at Inverness."

Aside from the game burger and beer were on sale and there was an auction of golfing memorabilia, including an 18th hole flag signed by Henrik Stenson and sporting and general memorabilia, including a Barcelona top signed by Messi, Suarez and Neymar Jnr, an England World Cup top signed by Geoff Hurst along with a photo and record signed by Led Zeppelin.

The auction and game raised £4500 with the money being split evenly between Gillians Saltire Appeal and Prestwick and Helensburgh Cricket Club.

Participating golfers enjoyed the experience and Otto said: "The caddies asked a few players to join them and cricket is one of our sports in South Africa so I couldn't really say no. I scored 19, my son plays a bit so I am into it a little."

Siem said: "I played for the first time last year and I enjoyed it. Nicolas Colsaerts was doing it so I had to. I scored four runs. I've never seen a cricket pitch in Germany, although I heard we won something the other week."

The night was more about charity, but for the record, the caddies won the game, scoring 154, with the cricketers 133 in reply.
