A WHEELY major award has been picked up by Struthers Primary School.

The Troon school were last week honoured with a Cycle Friendly School Award by Cycling Scotland.

The accolade was bestowed upon them in recognition of their efforts to support and encourage cycling.

The nationally recognised Cycle Friendly School Award rewards primary schools, teachers and volunteers committed to increasing cycling at school.

Struthers demonstrated their commitment by increasing cycle parking at the school, holding a “bike breakfast” for pupils, creating an in-depth travel plan and delivering all three levels of Bikeability.

Craig Dalziel, Struthers Bikeability Co-ordinator was proud the school’s work was recognised.

He said: “We are delighted to be recognised as a Cycle Friendly School, Struthers has a long tradition of delivering cycle training for over 20 years and was the first school in South Ayrshire to deliver Bikeability Scotland cycle training on road. This award is in recognition of our commitment to cycling over the long term and I would like to thank the volunteers, staff and pupils for their continued support.”

Matt Wilberton, Cycling Scotland Development Officer said, “Struthers Primary School has demonstrated their dedication towards active travel among pupils and staff by building a solid foundation of cycle training and promotion as they worked towards the award”.

The accolade has been developed by Cycling Scotland with the aim of promoting cycling to school as a pleasant, healthy and economical travel choice. To achieve the award, schools must show commitment to cycling by providing facilities such as bicycle parking, changing facilities and Bikeability Scotland cycle training.
