THE A77 Action Group is set to apply for the resurrection of their banners after they were taken down by Transerv Scotland.

It is hoped that 26 banners will be put back along the 50 mile stretch, from Whittlets roundabout in Ayr to Cairnryan.

Last month, four signs belonging to the group were taken down from the Ayr and Girvan area after Transerv and Transport Scotland claimed the signs were illegally placed and were removed due to the interested of public safety.

Speaking to the Ayr Advertiser, A77 Action Group campaigner John Campbell, said: “We had a meeting over the weekend and it went very well and lots were discussed, including the banners that were taken down.

“We are going to apply to Transerv Scotland to make it official and if we are told we can’t put the banners up then we can ask why.

“We are looking to put them in farmers’ fields, as some were more than happy for us to do that.

“If we get permission, it will be 26 banners along the 50 miles stretch.”

Mr Campbell added that their petition that racked up hundreds of signatures to get the go ahead for the dual carriage way on the A77, has moved onto the next stage to the petitions committee within the Scottish Government.

He said: “The petition that was set up and received hundreds of signatures about the A77 will be going to the latest petition committee of the Scottish government and a small group of us will be going to present evidence of why it needs to be looked at.

“They will look at any problems and see if there is anything they can do to help and take the case up to the Scottish government itself.

“This is a big step for us to get this as not many groups like us get this far in the process.

“I think what the petition committee will do is question the Transport Minister about the lack of investment in the roads and speak to him about why there has been no investment in this area of Scotland.”

A date is still to be set for the meeting in Edinburgh but the Action Group is hopeful it will set in motion what they have been hoping for – a duel carriageway from Ayr to Cairnryan.
