ALLOWAY and Doonfoot residents are begging the Corton Developers to promote a ‘no right turn’ on Corton Road to prevent road crashes.

The development has been on the cards since 2011 but now the construction could take place as early as next year, locals are determined to ‘get it right first time’.

It was discussed at a recent community council meeting in Alloway and Doonfoot. Members raised concerns about the volume of traffic driving through the new site as well as the various junctions on the A77.

Brendan Ferguson pointed out: “The junction at Corton Road is very dangerous. All the local residents know that but noone listens to us.

“We do not want to witness an accident there. It has taken multiple death crashes, further up the A77, to address safety issues.

“We have tried contacting Transport Scotland but they refuse to reply to us. We need to get this right first time.”

Chairwoman, Marilyn Dalgleish, added: “We have concerns about the safety of the road and have done for some time.

“You are are next big hope of relaying these fears to Transport Scotland because you are in contact with them”

Colin McPherson, development director with Manse, said: “When we came here tonight, we knew this was going to be an issue. We will definitely take your concerns into account.”

The public meeting also heard that there were plans with South Ayrshire Council to widen the road. Construction workers expect to be on site for at least 10 years once the new residential area has been completed.

It is anticipated there will be some 800 houses, of different categories, convenience stores, and a primary school.

Mr McPherson continued: “If we are lucky, we could sell 40-50 houses a year.”
Planning permission has already been granted to build a roundabout where Maybole Road joins the Bypass, which would include a footbridge over the road.

But developers are still considering a traffic light system with a pedestrian crossing as an alternative. They are also looking to open up footpaths that lead up to the hospital.

Although, it has not been confirmed, a new Lidl store could be opened at Corton to serve the immediate residents as well as those in Alloway and Doonfoot.

Planning permission for Corton is expected to be submitted to South Ayrshire Council in August.
