A NEW campaign to improve the A77 between Girvan and Stranraer is already gathering momentum and support.

The A77 Action Group was formed on Monday, November 28 by Cllr Willie Scobie, of Stranraer, who is concerned about the condition of the roads as well as the ‘lengthy’ diversions from Girvan to Stranraer via Newton Stewart.

Speaking about the appeal Cllr Scobie said: “There are different parts of the roads which are in a bad state.

"We have got support from the Ballantrae community but are hoping to get backing from Girvan, Maybole and Ayr.

“The roads need amended and investment to do so.

"We need that capital investment. It is not just the driving conditions which are a problem but the isolation.

"When the road is closed drivers are diverted through Newton Stewart.

“It is affecting the economy in the South West of Scotland.”

Supports have created their own Facebook page: A77 Action Group who also want to improve the road and get rid of traffic lights once and for all.

Cllr Scobie continued: “We were looking at a photo of the road from the 1900s and it looked as though it was in better condition then than it is now.

“On Wednesday we are going to meet to work on the wording for the online petition.

"More action will follow where we will be taking our case to the Scottish Parliament as well as the Northern Ireland Assembly.

“If you compare the A77 to the Irish Roads you will find there a duel carriageway down to Larne.

"We are just going to keep pressuring the Scottish Government until something is done.”
