ALL this week, betting shops across South Ayrshire will be participating in ‘Gamble Aware Week.”

Throughout the week, betting shop windows across Ayrshire will be taken over with Gamble Aware Week posters, highlighting the message “Never bet more than you can afford to lose” with clear advice to all punters:

The posters and in-shop leaflets also include details of the Gamble Aware website for those concerned about their gambling and seeking help.

New mandatory alerts for gaming machine players on what they are spending and the time they are playing for will be introduced.
From this week, alerts will appear on screen after someone has spent £150 or played for 20 minutes.

This compares to the £250 and 30 minute alerts previously in place.
Corri Wilson, MP  for Ayr, Carrick & Cumnock, has tabled an Early Day Motion in the House of Commons backing the campaign.

Ms Wilson said: “I am pleased to be able to support initiatives like Gamble Aware Week. Betting shops make an important contribution to jobs and the economy, both locally and UK-wide, but the industry also has a responsibility to ensure that their customers gamble responsibly and proper protections are in place for those who find this a challenge.

“When gambling becomes a problem for individuals, it can have a hugely destructive impact on their lives, and the lives of their loved ones.

"It is encouraging to see the range of measures being undertaken by the betting industry to raise awareness of responsible gambling among their customers and to prevent, identify and treat problem gamblers.”
