All primary, secondary and nurseries in South Ayrshire have been closed today

A RED weather warning has been issued for South Ayrshire and across Scotland - with officials at the Met Office expecting gusts of up to 90mph.

Gale force winds will hit from lunchtime to late evening though there will be strong gusts throughout the day and potentially power cuts.

Transport Scotland are urging people to pay attention to police travel warnings with officers advising travel conditions at the worst will be 'extremely poor' and 'significant delays are expected'.

Later in the afternoon showers are expected to turn back to snow over the higher ground at first but at lower levels in the evening.

After warnings of the weather South Ayrshire Council has closed all nursery, primary, secondary and special schools to pupils during today.

Ayr College has also closed for the day.

And the latest details National Rail, from 9am, reveal that trains will experience delays and cancellations with the Glasgow to Ayr train running an hourly service, departing from Glasgow at 30 minutes past each hour, and departing from Ayr at 43 minutes past each hour. These trains will call at all stations between Paisley Gilmour Street and Kilwinning. The trains will also be going slower, at 50mph.
