A CHARITY fundraiser is running the coast of the UK and has just landed in South Ayrshire.

Wayne Russell, a Gloucester resident, is doing the marathon run in memory of his sister.

Wayne began his journey in September 2015 with the hopes of raising £25,000 for children’s charity The Superhero Foundation. Wayne has completed the equivalent of 100 marathons.

Only armed with a tent and less than £1,000 of his own money, Wayne has been relying on social media to share his journey and the compassion of strangers to offer shelter on his way, which has included a fire station.

Wayne’s challenge to run the 5,000 mile coast of Britain was inspired by the premature death of his sister Carmel Webb on New Year’s Eve in 2013.

Wayne’s sister died at the age of 35, after a ten year long battle with Primary Pulmonary Hypertension, a rare heart condition. Carmel dedicated her life to charity and was chairman of the Podsmead Community Association, manager of a luncheon initiative for more than 100 senior citizens and the founder of Freedom Kids – a youth group for more than 60 children.

Wayne shares his proud feelings with his Facebook supporters, “I know I still have another 2,500 miles to go but, for the first time in a long while, I can't help but feel a little proud of myself. I led awake last night and all I could think about was that I'd just ran to Scotland! The long way."

Members of the public who would like to offer Wayne some shelter as he travels through Scotland, please get in touch via Wayne’s Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/mrwaynerussell.

Having already raised more than £4,500 (including Gift Aid), it is hoped the challenge will raise £25,000. Donations can be made here: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fund/waynerussell
