SAINSBURY’S Prestwick ‘relaxed lane’ is to become a permanent fixture following a successful month-long trail.
In June, Dementia Friendly Prestwick opened the supermarket’s ‘relaxed shopping’ lane, with staff who have undertaken dementia awareness training to help those living with the condition, and on Monday, July 23, the store and the group announced that it will be making the lane permanent.
Running seven days a week, from 10am-6pm, the relaxed lane will be run by Sainsbury’s colleagues that have participated in the awareness training, to ensure customers feel at ease when shopping in the supermarket.
The lane has a hearing loop and colleagues will be on hand to support people who need more time or help paying for their shopping.
Astrologer, Russell Grant, who is an ambassador for dementia, visited and took part in launching the relaxed lane as well as meeting the colleagues behind the initiative.
He commented: “I was really excited to hear about Sainsbury’s relaxed lane concept.
“Shopping can be a very daunting experience for those with dementia and an initiative like this will really make a difference.”
Lynne Nimmo, Store Manager at Sainsbury’s Prestwick, added: “We’re delighted the relaxed lane trial will now be a permanent feature in our store.
“It’s proved to be really popular with our customers and colleagues alike.
“By opening it up seven days a week between the hours of 10am to 6pm, we hope to provide an inclusive experience to ensure even our most vulnerable customers feel at ease when shopping with us.”
