The National Nature Reserves of Cairnsmore, Silver Flowe and the Merrick Kells Site of Special Scientific Interest make up the Biospheres Core Areas.

Councillor Alec Clark, represents South Ayrshire Council on the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere Partnership.

He said: “This is an important milestone for South Ayrshire. we now have 100 businesses and social enterprises raising the profile of our Biosphere and promoting the value of working with nature.

"Biospheres across the globe attract large numbers of tourists so our visitor attractions, accommodation providers, restaurants and other businesses could all benefit.

"There are only two Biospheres in Scotland so we are keen to shout about our status from the rooftops.”
Galloway and Southern Ayrshire has been designated a UNESCO ‘Biosphere’: a status awarded to world-class environments that demonstrate a balanced relationship between people and nature.
