Pupils from Kirkmichael and Straiton Primaries were hands on in the kitchen recently as part of an initiative funded through Education Scotland’s ‘Food For Thought’ programme.

This fund gives financial support to develop Food and Health within school settings by providing learning experiences which help to embed food education into the life of schools.

The children, along with their family members, produced a delicious seasonal dish of haggis, neeps and tatties while learning about the foods they were using and how to prepare them.

This was all under the watchful eye of Lindsay Guidi of The Home Cook School in Maybole who facilitated the sessions. Everyone involved agreed that the best part of the all their hard work was sampling the finished products.

Head Teacher of both schools, Liz Candlish, said: “The aim of the initiative was to give the children the opportunity to develop lifelong learning skills and encourage learning in a real life context while making links with a local business. It was great to see so many families cooking together.”

Throughout the programme pupils learn about sustainable food production, by growing their own produce, cooking and trying out new recipes and gaining an appreciation of the value of locally produce food and drink.

The pupils have gained valuable skills throughout the sessions.
