A DAD of six has raised concerns about parking outside Kincaidston Primary, after the school stopped parents from entering the car park.

Bryan McCulloch believes the decision came after a pupil was knocked down inside the school car park towards the end of 2017.

Further concerns have been raised as parents appear to be parking in front of houses making it difficult for children to cross the road safely.

Mr McCulloch said: “Kincaidston Primary have stopped parents from driving into the car park because a boy, between eight and nine, was knocked down. Following the incident, the school had a meeting about it but only two or three parents turned up and this was the outcome.

“Cars are blocking the road. When parents come down they are parking on the pavements outside the school gates and stopping people from leaving their driveways.

"They will just park anywhere and obstruct the view. It is a dangerous for children trying to cross the road. Someone is going to get hurt.

“Mr Sturgeon solved the problem of children not getting hurt inside the school but need to solve the problem outside the school. We need a special parking place for parents to drop off and pick up their children during the school day.”

Ian Sturgeon, Head Teacher of Kincaidston Primary, said: “In direct response to concerns about the safety of our pupils, we now close the car park at Kincaidston Primary to all vehicles for a short period of time at the start and end of the school day.

“This was agreed at a meeting held on December 1, to which all parents were invited, and introduced at the start of term. Feedback to date has been very positive, focusing on improved safety within the school grounds, and we will continue to monitor this closely.

“As set out in our school travel plan, which also promotes active travel, we are committed to promoting road safety and I would remind all parents who have to drive their children to school that they have a responsibility to park carefully – and legally – and with due consideration to other drivers and pedestrians at all times.

"We’re working to make sure that message hits home and our pupils can move safely in and out of the school at all times.”
