SOUTH Ayrshire Befriending Project (SABP) has been fighting social isolation in a bid to increase self esteem and confidence in young people.

SABP is a small locally run charity based in Ayr, and was established in 1996 to support vulnerable young people across South Ayrshire between 8 – 18, providing them with 1:1 befriending relationships and access activities in the community or develop a particular interest.

Lee Boyd, of the project said: “All of the young people referred to SABP have limited opportunities and face extreme difficulties in their lives.

“For the majority this will result in low confidence and self esteem which will prevent them from reaching their full potential and contributing positively within their own homes, school or local communities.

“SABP’s main outcome is to reduce this social isolation and increase the young people’s self esteem and confidence, enabling them to make positive choices and participate successfully in their social and educational communities.

“SABP is now supporting more young people than ever before and this would not be possible without our volunteers, whose support and commitment to the young people is invaluable. If you would like to give something back to the community and can spare 2-3 hours once a fortnight please get in touch.

“Volunteers with SABP have a lot of fun and gain satisfaction from sharing their time and experience with someone who needs them.”
