NEW safety measures for Barrhill WILL NOT be put in place despite villagers campaigning for change.

Many have raised concerns about speeding and careless driving through the village to local police and traffic officers who claim it would not be 'suitable' to install seed bumps or other measures.

The ongoing issue has been a hot topic for months and was discussed again at a recent public meeting. Phil Porter, resident and member of the community council, reported the results of his enquiries regarding speeding in the village and confirmed that Kenneth McLaren had liaised with PC Murray from Traffic Planning.

The response outlined their considerations when assessing requests for speed calming measures, which included vertical measures, speed bumps and chicanes.

After consideration it had concluded that the A714 through Barrhill was not suitable to have any of these measures installed.

A road has to meet certain criteria for this including sufficient road width. Traffic Planning also stipulated that a 20mph zone could not be supported without the means to reduce speed, unless outside a school.

This is the only place allowed and already has a 20mph limit imposed outside. James Duffie pointed out there is a 20mph stretch of road on the A77 at Maybole which of a lengthy section which does not pass a school.

Enquires were also made about installing speed cameras but residents say they have been told this is apparently hard to justify.

Community Councillors discussed the ongoing issue and have expressed their disappointment with decision that a 20mph zone could not be supported by police.
