AYR Sea Cadets will launch phase two of their 'Get Rowing Project' this Spring.

The first part of the project allowed kids from all over South Ayrshire, including Maidens, Dalmilling and Braehead Primary Schools to use Maidens and Troon Harbours.

About 100 children took part within a six week period.

Volunteers are looking to continue to offer these 'taster sessions' this summer with Coastal Rowing Partners and Scottish Rowing.

It is hoped with the rowing success at Rio last year more children will be keen to take up the sport.

They also want to develop a 'sliding seat' rowing taster session at UWS Campus on the River Ayr.

A new Community Boat shed at Maidens has been constructed and the grand opening is scheduled for next month.

Cadets will be transported to take part on the day and try out the equipment.

Staff from TS Mountbatten - Ayr & District Sea Cadets will continue to lead the School Rowing Taster Sessions throughout as well as providing the transport to and from each location.

Each activity session begins with a safety briefing which includes a Water Safety element as well as a clothing, equipment check of each pupil to ensure that they are suitably attired for rowing and that they are wearing a 50N Buoyancy Aid (supplied by Ayr Sea Cadets) correctly.

To celebrate their 75th anniversary last year Ayr Sea Cadets attended a Civic Reception at the Town Hall hosted by the Provost.

They also held their Anniversary Mess Dinner at the Parkstone Hotel in Prestwick, attended by several VIPs including the Lord Lieutenant, Provost and John Scott MSP.
