A GANTRY walk way had collapsed at Marr College last Wednesday as fire services were called to the scene.

The incident occurred at 6pm on Wednesday, October 12 as a twenty metre steel gantry walk way had dropped down approximately two feet as a result of sheared bolts in its support system.

Station Manager Derek Davidson said: “The initial report was of a structural collapse which can mean a very serious incident for the emergency services particularly if persons are involved and trapped. Luckily this event was due to a shearing of steel bolts from the concrete floor supports in the building which is currently undergoing construction work and refurbishment. The result was that a large walkway dropped a small distance from its original position and at that time was being supported as necessary by plant machinery which was already on site.”

He added: “As the gantry was being supported sufficiently by on site equipment the area was cordoned off to keep people out of the risk area and handed over to the site agent and contractors to rectify the issue with the support of local authority building control officers.”

Fire services confirmed no one was hurt.
