SHOPPERS have been left bemused after lights have not been turned off in BHS on Ayr's High Street which could be costing £1200 per week.

One local, who wants to remain anonymous raised concerns about the issue stating: "BHS in Ayr is closed but the lights are on all day. This will be costing about £1.2k a week is this left to tax payer to fund?

"Will someone use sense and switch them off."

A spokesman from South Ayrshire Council wanted to reassure members of the public this will not be a problem for them as it is not council property and will not cost residents a penny.

He said: "It is really down to the management company. There will be no bill for the council or the tax payer at some point because it is not a council owned property."

Ayr's BHS closed its doors on July 30 causing leaving 28 workers at the local branch devastated at the administration's decision to close the doors. It is one of more than 30 stores axed.

But, there seems to have been some confusion as to who is responsible for the Ayr store with former BHS boss Dominic Chappell, buying the retail chain from Sir Philip Green for £1 last year before it collapsed into administration.

It does not seem that the situation will be resolved soon but tax payers should be feel assured that they will not be charged for the lighting costs.

As the paper went to press the Ayr Advertiser Series were unable to get a comment from union Usdaw or anyone on behalf of the new management.
