THE Scottish SPCA are still appealing for information after a cat and a kitten were cruelly abandoned inside a gym bag outside Ayr.

These furry friends were discovered in a holdall by the Scotland's animal welfare charity who were alerted by a member of public who discovered the animals next to the A719 in Tarbolton on Sunday, April 23.

The young adult cat and four month old kitten are now in the care of the charity’s animal rescue and rehoming centre in Ayr, where they have been named Lily and Rose.

Inspector Leanne McPake said: "Lily and Rose were found on a grass verge inside a pink and black Nike bag which was zipped closed.

"A man was driving along this back road when his children noticed that the bag was moving, which is why he stopped to investigate.

"Discarding Lily and Rose in a bag was an extremely cruel thing to do and they would have died a slow and painful death had they not been discovered.

"Luckily both mum and baby seem to be doing okay despite their terrible ordeal and we are now keen to trace whoever is responsible.

"If anyone knows who did this we would urge them to contact our animal helpline on 03000 999 999.

"We will look after Lily and Rose until we can find them a loving new home."

The SSPCA would like to point out that abandoning and causing an animal unnecessary suffering are offences under the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006.

Anyone found guilty of doing so can expect to be banned from keeping animals for a fixed period or life.
