GOLFERS on Trump Turnberry golf course will be able to enjoy a drink from a refreshment buggy that will soon drive around the course.

The decision was made at a South Ayrshire Council licensing board meeting that the buggy which would sell beer would be available from 10am until 10pm at the latest.

The clubhouse and lighthouse on the site will also be licensed from 10am until 12.30pm daily but if managers want to they can request the hours are extended for special occasions and functions.

Before the decision was confirmed, Cllr Peter Convery said: “I am particularly relaxed about the clubhouse and the lighthouse.

“I think plans for them both are very good. You can have some really wonderful experiences there too. I think we can be expected to realise this is very advantageous.”

But it was not all straight forward as councillors had previously been required to make another decision on licensing hours for the hotel and surrounding outside grounds.

Applicants requested the hotel and the outside areas were licensed from 10am until 2am, meaning the hotel would sell alcohol for 16.5 hours opposed to the licencing protocol 14.5 hours, as well increase the outdoor drinking area to the main road so visitors could enjoy the views.

Chairwoman Ann Galbraith questioned: “Why does it have to be from 10am in the morning? If it was 12pm until 2pm the problem would vanish.”

Cllr Andy Campbell added: “One of the reasons explained was to take in the views but on a long summers day the views are limited after 10pm so I cannot agree with that.”

Cllr Allan Dorans said: “We have protocol for a reason and I would not be happy granting these hours to anyone.

“In terms of serving drink, I would be against serving after 10pm. How would you control drinking and how much people drink? That is why we have licensing in place.”

The board adjourned to decide the best outcome. Trump Turnberry Hotel will be licensed from 11.30am until 2am.

The outside drinking area, which has been extended to the main road, will be licensed until 10pm.
